4th March 2026 – Mediacorp Live Panel Discussion – Talk of the Town “狮城热话”.
SECA Advisor & Council Member Mr John Tan was invited to share his views on Mediacorp Channel 8 live panel discussion programme – Talk of the Town – “狮城热话”.
On the discussion panel was
– Ministry of Manpower Senior Minister of State Dr Koh Poh Koon
– SECA Advisor & Council Member Mr John Tan
– ASME President Mr Ang Yuit, and
– NTU Mechanical Engineering graduate Mr Tan Shi Jun
The topic centred on the popular notion that all computer-related jobs will eventually be replace by IT while skilled trades such as the electrical trade will remain secure.
Mr Tan believes with the current changing working environment, electricians need to more ready and able to handle the different problems and that currently they will not be completely replaced by AI.
SMS Dr. Koh Poh Koon pointed out that the country’s demand for electric networks will increase in the future, so the government needs to vigorously promote the development of the electrical industry. The government also hopes that the electrical industry can take the lead in promoting local blue-collar jobs to attract more local young people to join the profession.
